Review: ICC Champions Trophy 2013

Review: ICC Champions Trophy 2013

Success or a failure?

At this point, while I write this article, the tournament hasn't concluded yet. Four teams have qualified for the Semi-Finals, and final battles will  begin for this last champions trophy.

This champions trophy had much hype in the media for many reasons. One major reason was that it was made known to everyone that this would be the last champions trophy - there won't be such events in the future (meaning any form of this tournament - knockout or the one seen today). The reason for cancelling this tournament is that to make room for Twenty20 tournaments it is necessary to cancel the champions trophy. Reason is probably a good one. But its still sad to see this important cricketing tournament disappear.

With the rise of Twenty20, One Day Internationals also came under scrutiny. This series was supposed to serve as a median for people to judge ODI cricket. Through this series it was to be seen if ODI cricket has any future. Sadly, poor weather of England gave this form of cricket a bad name. Throughout this tournament matches were affected by rains. Some were washed out, others decided through Duckworth/Lewis method.

I am not going to write anymore on this as the tournament hasn't finished yet. But, I will add that this tournament hasn't delivered what it should have. However, since it isn't over yet; three very crucial games are yet to be played - two semis and one final. If we get some good cricket in these matches, our perception may remain good for ODI cricket.

Regardless of our feelings concerning ODI cricket & Champions Trophy 2013, this tournament won't be anymore.
Enjoy!
